The British are generally considered to be a nation of bird-lovers, but birds can be unwelcome guests in our towns and cities. And getting rid of them is not as easy as you may imagine, for all birds and their eggs and nests, are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of1981. Under this act a licence is required to destroy birds, their eggs and their nests, while being built or in use.
Some species of bird, particularly pigeons, starlings and various sea birds, have become a real nuisance in our towns and cities, thriving as food is in plentiful supply through sources such as discarded takeaway meals and public feeding. Bird droppings, create an unsightly blemish on buildings, and are dangerous underfoot. More worryingly, they pose a very real health risk in that they can harbour disease. The birds themselves can also cause problems, particularly when large numbers are roosting, with noise, smell and other annoyances such as triggering intruder alarms.
The best way to deal with nuisance birds is to keep them off your property altogether, and one of the most effective means of bird deterrent is the repellent spike strip. This consists of a plastic strip from which thin spikes protrude at angles to deter perching. These strips are applied to sills and ledges where birds would normally perch creating a physical barrier that deters birds without harming them. Bird repellent strips are generally invisible from the ground.
